Gay-friendly Sites in Vienna

Vienna may still have many historical structures that have remained from the imperial regime in the past but its environment and the quality of life in the city today speaks of modern times. With 1.7 million residents, the Austrian capital has been accommodating people of varied culture, races and gender from around the world.

Gays are fortunate to have major events in this international city catered to them. These include the Life Ball, Rainbow Parade, Rainbow Ball and Identities Queer Film Festival.

Just last month, Vienna’s government reviewed its tourism campaign and included the LGBT (lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transsexuals) community in its target market in promoting the city’s music, culture and imperial history.

Here are some gay-friendly tourist sites worth visiting:

Schloss Belvedere – This is the former residence of Prince Eugene of Savoy who is rumored to be gay. A baroque palace, it is home to the world’s largest Gustav Klimt collection including his famous painting “The Kiss.” 

Cafe Central – For those who want to splurge on expensive coffee, this place is highly recommended. This used to be frequented by the likes of Sigmund Freud, Vladimir Lenin, Adolf Hitler and Leon Trotsky in 1913.

Cafe Savoy – Known as a popular gay friendly place, this cafe at the end of the Naschmarkt features statues, chandeliers and wood paneling.

Loewenherz Bookstore – The bookworms can feast their eyes on more than 12,000 titles in this shop considered one of the biggest gay bookstores in Europe.

Vienna State Opera House – This building is said to have been designed by two gay architects – Eduard van der Nuell and August Sicard von Sicardsburg.
