Green parks abound in Vienna and one of the best is the Green Prater which spans six million square meters. Situated some three kilometers from St. Stephen’s Cathedral, this park boasts of vast lawns, woods and water areas conducive for relaxation, biking, skating, hiking and jogging.
The main section of this park is the Hauptallee which stretches 4.5 kilometers long and lined by 2,500 trees. This broad boulevard is situated between Praterstern and Lusthaus and is widely used by cyclists, skaters, runners, pedestrians and even the Viennese horse-drawn carriages or Fiaker.
Those who love to go biking can do so as there are bicycles for rent in the area. There are also “pedi cabs” or the bicycle rickshaw types available.
Another way to go around the green park is by taking the Liliputbahn miniature railroad which leaves near the Riesenrad and brings you to the Ernst Happen stadium.
From the main avenue, another green section in the park features meadows, woods and the former Danube channels. The Heustadlwasser, on the other hand, is where visitors can go for boat rides while the Golfclub Freudenau is in place for golf players. Horse racing can also be enjoyed at the Vienna Harness Racing Club situated at the back of the Vienna Congress Center.
