Vienna in the Fall

When the weather starts getting cooler, the air crisp, and the leaves start changing colors then you know that it’s time to say goodbye to summer and hello to the golden hues of Fall. In Vienna it also means a change in activities around the city – but it doesn’t mean that the fun slows down! Here are some things that you can do in the city from the late weeks of September until November.

Take a walk in the parks or the forest. Fall is a great time to put on those walking shoes, wear warmer clothes and take a stroll in places like the Lainzer Tiergarten, the Hermesvilla, Schloss Schonbrunn and the Vienna Forest just to name a few. Also while the ground is not yet covered with frost, fall is a good time to walk up the hills just outside of Vienna like the Klosterneuburg. Fall means wine harvest season so this is also a good time to visit vineyards. Moreover, heurigers (wine taverns) will be serving “Sturm” (a lightly fermented grape juice) around this time. Visit heurigers in Ottakring, Grinzing, Nussdorf or take a day trip to places outside of Vienna such as Baden.

When the season changes so do most of the cultural offerings in the city – watch out for updates on the new exhibitions in museums and art galleries as well as new season programmes in theatres and operas. Although not as many as in the summer, there will still be notable music festivals during the fall. There’s the Kammermusikfestival that ends in September and the Bratislava Jazz Days in October.
