Bike in Vienna

Vienna is well known for its bicycle lifestyle which not only promotes a healthy lifestyle for residents and visitors but also reduces the city’s carbon footprint.

Owing to this cycling system in place, Vienna is in the world’s top 20 list of bike-friendly cities. The Austrian capital is in 16th place in the Copenhagenize Index which noted the city’s cycle tracks and modern facilities unmatched by other cities around the world.

Vienna, however, still has more to do. It needs to expand and upgrade its bike share system and further improve its bicycle infrastructure.

Cyclists in Vienna agree that the city is a cyclists’ paradise. Proof of this are the existence of some 1,200 kilometers of cycleways, dedicated road lanes and a traffic-calmed centre. The Vienna Woods is just one area outside the city that has excellent trails for mountain biking.

The Copenhagenize Index is a bi-annual study that covers 122 metropolitan cities worldwide. It ranks the cities based on 13 categories such as bicycle advocacy, infrastructure, modal share and the local biking culture, among others.

Meanwhile, Austria boasts of more than 10,000 kilometers of well developed and safe cycling trails. Cyclists can also enjoy beautiful sceneries such as riversides and lakes, historical towns, amazing mountain ranges and idyllic villages.
