Why Vienna is Still a Top Destination

The Austrian capital continues to be an in demand city. The year 2012 was considered the city’s most successful tourism year for various reasons.

During the year 2012, some 5.6 million tourists were noted to have stayed overnight in Vienna. The 150th anniversary of the birth of Gustav Klimt was another important factor that drove people to this international city.

Additionally, that same year saw almost 267,000 U.S. citizens checking into Vienne hotels and staying a total of 617,602 nights. Unknown to some people, the U.S. is the fifth most important tourism market of Vienna following Germany, Austria, Italy and Russia.

In terms of quality of life, a survey done by Mercer put Vienna in the top spot. Among 221 cities, the Austrian capital edged out Zurich for the fourth consecutive year. A similar survey done by the Economic Intelligence Unit covering 140 cities ranked Vienna in the second spot behind Melbourne, Australia.  

In the list of EUropean Cities of the Future, the fDI Magazine that looks into direct investment from foreign countries ranked Vienna in third place. In the area of economic potential, however, the city was on top of the list.

Vienna’s hosting of international congresses has also put the city in the top spot of the ICCA list. The Austrian capital maintained its number one ranking for seven straight years.

Still another study conducted by the United Nations included Vienna among the top 70 metropolises. The State of the World’s Cities for 2012-2013 took into account several criteria such as quality of life, infrastructure, productivity, social inclusion and sustainability.
