Germany may be well known for its Oktoberfest but Vienna is not to be outdone because it also has its own version called the Wiener Wiesn Festival. Scheduled on September 19 to October 6 in Vienna Prater, the event will feature music (Austrian bands to include EAV, Jazz Gitti, Adi Hirschal, and Petra Fey), traditional costumes as well as food, particularly delicacies, and customs.
Instead of the usual beer, the festival will also provide an opportunity for participants to enjoy their favorite wine in a special barn. Local cuisine to be offered are the usual Wiener Schnitzel and Brettljause.
There will also be a stage for traditions in accordance with the theme Golden Austria, a first for this event. On this new festival stage at the Wiesndorf site, participants will get to see traditional groups such as the Alpenhorn players from Western Austria’s Vorarlberg perform.
Three tents will also be put up to accommodate the varied musical concerts. During daytime, visitors can enter the site for free. Those who want to attend the party, though, will have to purchase tickets.
On September 25, the event will give recognition to the gay lesbian community through the first Pink wiener Wiesn Fest. This will take place in the Wojnar tent as part of the Vienna Day.
The Wiener Wiesn Festival is the largest public and folk festival in the entire Austria. Being a major event, it requires an area of 19,000 square meters. Started in 2011, this is the third festival to take place in Vienna. Some 320,000 people have so far attended the event in the last two years.
