Swimming is a very popular activity during summer time and if you’re heading to Vienna or other parts of Austria, you won’t be disappointed. Although Austria does not have natural beaches, it sure has its share of beautiful lakes and rivers where people can enjoy a dip in the natural waters.
Old Danube
When you’re in Vienna, the Old Danube or Alte Donau is the best place to visit. The Gansehaufel area boasts of two kilometersr of beach plus there are also swimming pools, playgrounds and cafes.
The Lobau in eastern Vienna is perfect for the more adventurous people. It is part of the Donau-Auen National Park and features ponds and creeks great for swimming. It can be reached via the National Park Boat from Salztorbrucke, Franz-Josefs Quay.
Lunzer See
Lunzer See is the largest lake in Lower Austria. It features a diving tower and rental boats are available for those who want to go boating at the lake. A lakeside restaurant is in place offering an amazing view of the lake particularly at the terrace.
Lake Attersee
This lake boasts of turquoise waters and is well known for its excellent sailing conditions. The place is also great for swimming, diving and waterskiing. Campsites and hotels are nearby.
Neusiedler See
The Neusiedler See is Austria’s biggest lake and enjoys sunshine for the most part of the year. A popular summer destination for families, the lake is greaet for swimming and windsurfing.
Weissensee
Weissensee is the highest lake of Carinthia. Situated 1,000 meters above sea level, the place boasts of clear water with a temperature of 24C during the hot summer months. Two thirds of the lake shores are protected by conservation laws.
Wolfgangsee
The largest lake of Salzburg, Wolfgangsee stretches 11 kilometers. Two main resorts are in place – St. Wolfgang and St. Gilgen while hotels and camping sites are also available in Strobl. This lake is popular among families, swimmers and scuba divers.
