Coffee in Vienna

There’s no doubt that coffee is one of the most favorite morning
drinks for many people around the world. Vienna is no exception. People
here, whether locals or tourists, crave for this traditional drink
wherever they go. For them, a day won’t be complete with sipping their
cup or cups of coffee. It is no surprise then why coffeehouses abound
in this Austrian city.

Did you know that Vienna has more than
2,500 coffeehouses? These places range from the traditional to the more
modern ones but one thing’s for sure, they serve your coffee hot and
just right to your tastebuds.

Café Sperl – This is one
of Vienna’s historic cafes with very traditional ambience and situated
in a quiet area off the vibrant Ringstrasse. It is also here where the
famous Austrian musician Johann Strauss played his music.

Café Central
Another classic coffeehouse with a Baroque style which opened in1860.
In the late 19th century, it served as an important meeting place for
the intellectuals of Vienna. It closed at the end of the Second World
War but reopened in 1975.

Kaffee Alt Wien – This
classic place at Bäckerstraße 9 was established in 1936 by newly
married couple Leopoldo and Josefine Hawelka. It is now more of a night
café.

Café Braunerhof – This café and restaurant is at
Stallburggasse 2 and features live music via a small orchestra every
Saturday. Known as the favorite café of author Thomas Bernhard, it
claims to have the widest selection of newspapers in the entire Vienna.

Griensteidl Café – Open from morning till midnight, this
café in Michaelerplatz 2 used to be the preferred café of artists but
has become a favorite place of tourists, businessmen and journalists. A
terrace is open during the summer.

Café Dommayer – This
is well known for being the place where the famous Austrian violinist
and composer Johann Strauss played his music for the first time in
public at the young age of 19. The café situated in the suburb of
Hietzing boasts of a traditional and elegant atmosphere.
