The LGBT community in Vienna is thriving and also attracting more visitors to the city, thanks to the numerous fun and colorful events that celebrate their lifestyle. What used to be just small pockets of activities held in bars and clubs are now taken to the streets and bigger venues to accommodate more people and to also encourage open participation.

Here are some of the popular events for gays and lesbians in Vienna: Life Ball. Started in 1992, the event meant to raise awareness and funds to fight AIDS is the biggest and the most spectacular in Europe. Life Ball is conceptualized along the traditional Viennese ball but with the flair and pomp of fancy costume queer parties. Through the years it has been successful in attracting not only media attention but the participation of international celebrities such as Elton John, Sharon Stone, Heidi Klum and fashion designers like Thierry Mugler, Calvin Klein, and Jean-Paul Gaultier to name a few.

With glitzy fashion shows, operettas and other musical performances, Life Ball has been able to raise close to a million euros every year aside from providing a night of glamorous fun for the participants. The five-day festival features a “Pride Village” where different activities will be held like food fairs, parties, musical performances and informative presentations. The highlight of the week is the Rainbow Parade which starts and ends at Rathausplatz.
