Gasometer City

Tourists in Vienna will never go home disappointed. That’s a guarantee. With so much to explore in the Austrian capital, there will always be pleasant memories worth keeping throughout their lifetime.

Visitors in the city can choose between the popular tourist attractions and the unexplored ones that are out of the way. It’s understandable for first-time visitors to choose the most well known spots but for those visiting for the second or nth time, there are hidden gems worth visiting.

The Gasometer City is strongly recommended. A famous structure in this place is that of the Simmering Gas Works on Guglgasse in the 11th district.

Visitors will find here the first municipal gas storage tanks made of iron and enclosed in brick walls with a height of 55 meters. The tanks stored inflammable gas that were produced from hard coal.

Gas produced from these four tanks were provided to homes in Vienna via a pipeline system. Each year, more then 100 million cubic meters of gas were supplied to Viennese homes. Unfortunately, it was not sufficient.

By 1969, the company stopped gas production but the storage tanks were still used until 1984. In 2001, four internationally known architects were commissioned to create something out of the four tanks. Their creations are now what visitors can see in Gasometer City.

Gasometer A is an indoor plaza with huge windows. Gasometer B features a 22-storey building in a bending shape attached to it. Gasometer C is now an eco-friendly apartment building with indoor gardens while Gasometer D was also made into an apartment building.
