The Globe Museum

The globe, as we know it, is a representation of the Earth. Specifically, it is a three-dimensional scale model of a planet, a star or moon.

People who collect globes or are simply interested in viewing a collection can be greatly inspired when in Vienna. This is because a globe museum is available in the Austrian capital showcasing all kinds of this spherical scale model of the planet we live in. It is considered the only public museum in the world exclusively displaying globes.

In this particular museum, visitors will have the opportunity to see finely crafted globes of varied sizes and other scientific instruments. They range from the old ones to the more contemporary types. Some of the types visitors can find here are the folding fabric globes inflated using a bellows, giant and life-sized globes as well as small globes made from dark wood.

The brass tellurions are also some of the Globe Museum’s interesting items on display. A tellurion is a mechanical demonstration of the earth’s movement in its axes. It features a long arm with one end having a small rotating globe with a moon moving around it. The other end of the arm has a sun that uses a candle and a brass reflecting disc.

When this tellurion starts operating, the earth and its moon spin and the system then shows the seasons, eclipses, tides and the equinox among other astronomical phenomena.
