In Vienna, visitors can still explore many old and historical buildings spread around the city. When it comes to housing, one most notable structure in the Austrian capital is the Karl-Marx-Hof. It is considered one of the best municipal tenement complexes situated in Dobling in Vienna’s 19th district. Additionally, it is known as the world’s longest ingle residential building.
The Karl-Marx-Hof features housing superblocks constructed after the war to meet the housing demand in Vienna. A city planner by the name of Karl Ehn constructed the building between 1927 and 1930 in a land that used to be under the waters of the Danube. Originally, it was called RingstraBe des Proletariats and featured more than 1,300 apartments. Also in place are various amenities such as baths, kindergartens, a library, laundromats, doctor offices and business offices.
This particular blocks of building stretching one kilometer was damaged by artillery in 1934 during the Second World War and was repaired in the 1950s. It underwent further renovation works between 1989 and 1992.
Although the building was renamed as Heiligenstadter Hof during the Anschluss, it got its original name back in 1945.
