Oktoberfest Dress Code

Many people look forward to celebrating Oktoberfest each year. It’s an annual event that lets people enjoy their favorite beers, socialize and meet new friends.

But there’s more to beer drinking during Oktoberfest. If you’re serious about taking part in this fun event, you also need to know the proper dress code although this is not a requirement for attendance.

Dressing in the traditional Austrian-German costume is a fun way to enjoy this famous Oktoberfest.

For women, the traditional attire is normally conservative and features the “dirndl,” a dress consisting of a full skirt and a low-sleeveless top worn over a blouse. This dirndl is a traditional dress for women which features an apron and worn over the dress. It is often made of hand-printed material which contributes to its high cost.

While this dress can extend up to the ankles, any woman can decide on the length. The top part may have a bodice-like design but some are just plain.

There’s also another option if you don’t have the budget to buy a traditional dirndl. You can simply create your own by using a separate skirt and bodice. For the skirt, you can pick the cotton A-line type in either red, dark green, brown, sky blue or black then use an apron over your skirt.

Don’t forget the stockings and high-heeled shoes or clogs.

For the males, the traditional outfit is known as “lederhosen.”  This features a long or short sleeved plain white or light checkered shirt and a pair of lenderhosen with suspenders worn over the shirt and pants. Lenderhosen refers to a type of traditional leather breeches and the authentic ones can be very costly.

The socks should be white, gray, light brown or hunter green and can be worn up below the knee or pushed down depending on the way you are wearing the lenderhosen.
