Vienna in the Spring

In the springtime, Vienna becomes awash in colorful festivities and fun activities for the young and old. There are traditional celebrations observed by the locals as well as cultural events that attract visitors far and wide. Here are some of the most popular things that take place in Vienna in the spring: Easter Markets: After the Lenten season, the streets of Vienna come alive with local markets that offer traditional handmade and homemade items – from food to all sorts of crafts.

At the Schloss Schonbrunn Palace, the Easter market usually opens from March 20 and lasts for three weeks. Here you can find items such as hand-painted Easter eggs, spring wreaths and glass-blown crafts. There is also one over at the old cobbled square in Freyung and the Easter market here holds the record for the largest stack of Easter eggs in all of Europe.

Vienna Spring Festival: Considered as one of the most-awaited and highly-acclaimed events in Vienna, the two-week long classical music festival is an event that draws crowds from all over the world. Since 1992, the city plays host to well-known international artists where about 80 concerts and musical performances are held in different venues every year.

Wiener Festwochen: Another cultural event not to be missed during Spring is the Vienna Festival. Started in 1951, this five-week stream of festivities is a feast for the senses – the programme ranges from concerts, film and video showing, plays and art exhibits and installations. The event takes place between May and June and attracts over 180,000 visitors every year.
