Vienna’s Famous Fine Arts Educational Institution

Talk about arts and culture and Vienna has lots to offer to its visitors. One remarkable institution in the Austrian capital that provides top quality education on the arts is the Academy of Fine Arts (Akademie der Bildenden Kunste).

Established in 1692 by court painter Peter Strudt, the Academy is one of Vienna’s oldest institutions for higher education. The university offers a wide range of art majors and also accommodates international students.

The school’s famous rectors and artists were forced to leave during the Second World War. Post-war, Austria reinstated the institution’s staff and collections.

The Academy of Fine Art’s University Library boasts of 110,000 volumes. The Prints and Drawings Collection, meanwhile, features 60,000 drawings and prints including the graphic works of Rembrandt and Durer among other artists. This graphic work collection is considered the largest and most important collection of its kinds in Austria.

The Academy’s cafeteria is also popular in the city as it accommodates even non-students. Situated in the Theophil Hansen historical building, this small cafeteria serves delectable and affordable meals that cost from 3.90 euros to 4.20 euros only and is a great place to be in an artsy university crowd.
